Ensure reliable protection for your electrical machinery with Himel ACB
Circuit breakers are installations on your electrical circuit that prevent it from damage caused by a short circuit current or an overload condition. An Air Circuit Breaker is a switch that protects your electrical circuits over 400 Amps to 5000 Amps from overcurrent and short circuit faults and is generally used for low voltage distribution networks. ACB uses air as a medium to quench the arc (the dielectric medium) at a given atmospheric pressure. For higher voltage applications, ACB uses pressurized air as a dielectric medium because of its higher dielectric constant value when compared to atmospheric air. The primary function in a nutshell is to interrupt the current flow when the fault is detected thus providing protection and safety in industrial operations.
How Air Circuit Breakers work?
Scanning through the ACB, one would find LED indication lamps, ON & OFF switches, the main contact’s indication, fault trip reset switch, etc. On the inside there is a steel sheet structure which houses the current transformer, arcing chambers, closing springs, controls for CB opening and closing, trip unit for protection, main contacts and the arching contacts and the complete set up for your safety.
Normally, an ACB has two contact pairs. The main pair, made of copper, carries current at normal load. Another pair, generally made of carbon, is the arching contact. When the breaker opens, opening the main contacts, arch contacts are still intact. The initiation of arcing arises once the arch contact opens up. The arc discharge then moves due to electromagnetic and thermal effects. The arc path is increased and following it up increases the arc voltage which is done by splitting the arc. This steadily extinguishes the arc during the zero current.
